Why Choose Rio for Your Honeymoon?

If you decided that the spouse (newlywed or not so much) deserved to go away with you, that means that big guns AKA Grandparents have been involved. Meaning you want to go BIG and not children friendly. Rio de Janeiro is a city that effortlessly combines natural beauty with cultural vibrancy, making it an ideal destination for a couples retreat. Imagine starting your day with a scenic hike up to Christo Redemptor overlooking the city. Then, unwind on the iconic Copacabana Beach, where the rhythm of samba lingers in the air. The sight of peachy Brazilian bums, suddenly makes you feel quite sexy with your pregnancy leftovers here and there! The city’s pulsating energy is perfect for a kid free holiday, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture without limitations and distractions. Just before sunset take a cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain, offering panoramic views of the Cidade Maravilhosa. By night, explore Rio’s nightlife, filled with lively music and dance, ensuring your romantic getaway is anything but dull. Plus, with a variety of luxury accommodations offering stunning views and top-notch amenities, couples can indulge in the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. With so many Rio de Janeiro attractions to explore, you’ll find endless opportunities to create cherished memories with your partner. On the other side – Rio in December was like a balm to my cold body. Hot sand, warm ocean, cold drinks, and a Christmas tree in the middle of the lake added an extra layer to my sun-worshipping soul.

Kid Free Holiday Planning Tips

Planning a kid free holiday in Rio de Janeiro involves a few strategic moves to ensure a stress-free, romantic experience. I’d say that not worrying about nappies and snacks supply already takes the majority of stress away, but… Start by booking accommodations that cater to adults, offering amenities like spa services, gym (I took all my gear and didn’t go there once) or rooftop bar with pool. Can you imagine yourself chillaxing with one foot inside the water, with a glass of passion fruit caipirinha and eyes shut? And there is no child’s life depending on your eagle’s eyesight and reflex of a ninja? Do you like mimosas for breakfast? I certainly do…

Consider scheduling activities that foster relaxation and intimacy, such as a couple’s massage or a private sunset cruise. The city has loads to offer, and if you can only stay for 6 nights, it’s also wise to research and select Rio de Janeiro attractions in advance. It will be a very busy week! Focus on those that enhance your romantic getaway vibe, like a heat-escape in Jardim Botânico or helicopter flight tour. For dining, seek out cosy restaurants with intimate settings to enjoy Brazil’s vibrant cuisine without interruption (you’ll be surprised how delicious it is!). By taking these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to fully embrace the magic of a kid free holiday in Rio de Janeiro.

Top Rio de Janeiro Attractions for Couples

Rio de Janeiro offers numerous attractions perfect for couples seeking a memorable romantic getaway. If you would like to have an iconic photo sitting on Escadaria Selaron, you better cut drinking night before! It’s very popular place (do you remember Pharrell and Snoop Dog singing Beautiful?). If you want that memorable photo without other tourists in the background, you’d better be there at 8am! Half way up the stairs on left hand side, there a little business that will take a picture of you and fire it on a tile for you to take home. Great souvenir!

For a touch of nature, visit the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, a lush rainforest offering serene trails ideal for a leisurely hike together. Art lovers will appreciate a visit to the Museu de Arte do Rio, featuring an impressive collection of Brazilian art (my personal favourite), Museu do Amanhã if you have a geeky side or Museu de Favela to learn about the community of city within the city. I loved walking around the centro, imagining I am one of the locals, finishing work in the office, going to meet friends at the bar for few cervejias. Not mentioning little kiosks around the town always ready to make you a refreshing caipirinha, which is exactly what you need (if you tolerate booze and temperatures well) during 40 degrees Celsius heat!

As evening falls, take a romantic stroll down the Boulevard Olímpico, adorned with vibrant street art and bustling with energy. Don’t miss the chance to visit Christ the Redeemer, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, offering a spectacular backdrop for unforgettable photos. Lastly, unwind at Ipanema Beach, where you can enjoy a quiet moment watching the sunset, cocktails in hand. These Rio de Janeiro attractions promise to enhance your kid free holidays in this marvellous city.

Exploring Rio’s Romantic Side

Must-Visit Beaches for Couples

Rio de Janeiro’s beaches are quintessential for a romantic honeymoon. Copacabana Beach is a must-visit, famous for its vibrant atmosphere and stunning scenery. After many hours spent online looking for a perfect hotel – PortoBay was THE choice, located directly by the beach above. Couples can enjoy a leisurely walk along its iconic promenade, stopping for a refreshing caipirinha (or coconut water straight from the shell) at one of the many beachside kiosks. For a more tranquil experience, head to Prainha Beach, a secluded spot surrounded by lush hills, perfect for a peaceful day of sunbathing and swimming. Ipanema Beach offers a lively yet sophisticated vibe, with its picturesque setting ideal for a romantic sunset view. Don’t miss Arpoador, renowned for its breathtaking sunset views, where you can sit on the rocks and watch the sun dip below the horizon, making it a perfect moment for couples. These beaches not only offer stunning natural beauty but also provide the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories on your kid free vacation in Rio. As every place has it’s quirky side, don’t be surprised if a bunch of sex workers approach your husband despite him holding your hand. You might spot them ‘at work’ next to your table at the bar, being all over some thirsty male tourist. Just as well you don’t have any kids with you!

Dining Delights: Restaurants in Rio

Rio de Janeiro is home to a variety of romantic dining options that are perfect for couples seeking a memorable meal. Begin your culinary journey at Aprazível, nestled in the hills of Santa Teresa, offering stunning views and a menu filled with Brazilian flavours. Its treehouse-like setting creates a truly intimate atmosphere. For an authentic taste of Rio, head to Pavão Azul in Copacabana. That’s where Cariocas (natives of Rio) dine. It’s very street like, but the fact you are eating delicious Arroz de Pato (duck rice) and Feijoada (beans and meat stew), surrounded by locals drinking Cachaça and playing cards will be one to remember. My husband loved it so much, we ate there everyday.

For a seafood craving, head to Satyricon in Ipanema, renowned for its fresh catches and elegant atmosphere. In Copacabana, the bustling market street boasts a variety of top-quality sushi restaurants. Surprisingly, Brazil became one of my favorite places for Japanese cuisine! For a special occasion, indulge in fine dining at Oro, where Chef Felipe Bronze creates innovative dishes that tantalize the senses. For a different adventure, visit Bar do David on the outskirts of Mangueira Favela, offering traditional favelan cuisine. I discovered this spot through a National Geographic guide, and TripAdvisor photos piqued my interest. Upon arrival, security with firearms ensured our safety, while kids on bikes relayed messages. The food was delightful, but the experience left me uneasy. Observing tourists dining without a care made me question whether I was overly cautious or if they were simply unaware. Nonetheless, we made it through.

Loads of traditional Brazilian Churrascaria’s (steakhouses) where your meat loving husband is up for a barbeque feast. Waiters coming to you with freshly cooked picanha slices or cinnamon covered, barbequed pineapple for a desert! I get hungry just thinking about it.

Each of these restaurants offers a unique experience, ensuring that your romantic getaway includes unforgettable dining moments. Exploring these culinary delights is a wonderful way to immerse yourselves in the local culture while enjoying your kid free holiday.

Nightlife and Entertainment for Two

Rio de Janeiro’s nightlife is legendary, offering a vibrant mix of music and culture that’s perfect for couples on a romantic getaway. Begin your evening at Rio Scenarium, a popular samba club in Lapa, where you can dance the night away to live music in a vintage setting. The club’s eclectic decor and lively atmosphere create an unforgettable experience. For a more laid-back evening, head to Bar Urca, where you can enjoy a cold cerveja and stunning bay views as you watch the sunset. Jazz enthusiasts will appreciate The Maze, known for its intimate jazz nights and panoramic vistas of the city. If you’re seeking a unique experience, and are a footie fan – consider attending a live football match at the iconic Maracanã Stadium, where the energy is contagious. These nightlife options cater to diverse tastes, ensuring that your kid free holiday in Rio is filled with memorable evenings spent enjoying the city’s dynamic entertainment scene.

Couples Travel Tips and Tricks

Packing for a Honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro

Packing smartly for your honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro ensures a stress-free and enjoyable trip. Start with versatile clothing that is both comfortable and stylish (but not prude!) like lightweight dresses and shorts for daytime exploring, and a few elegant outfits for romantic dinners. To be honest, I have worn only half of my clothes, as my usual safe, GO TO iconic outfits made me feel like a nun. Brazilian women are very proud of their curves, so better go to the attic to dig out some of those short skirts and tank tops, you used to freeze your ovaries during uni nights out! Maybe your teenage daughter will lend you some of her wardrobe. New pair of Havaianas flip flops and you’re ready to hit the promenade!  Don’t forget swimwear for the beautiful beaches and hotel pools. Given Rio’s sunny climate, pack a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for protection, along with plenty of sunscreen. A sturdy pair of sandals and walking shoes will serve you well for both the city streets and hiking trails. For those spontaneous samba nights, consider packing comfy sandals on tiny heels. Bring a compact backpack for day trips to carry essentials like water, snacks, and a camera. With these packing tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy all the Rio de Janeiro attractions on your kid free holiday.

Navigating Rio Safely as a Couple

Ensuring safety during your honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro is crucial for a carefree experience. It is an enormous city with a very large population living in poverty (my mama heart was broken when everyday we have been passing a homeless woman and her newborn girl, living on the churches step). Start by choosing accommodations in well-regarded neighbourhoods like Ipanema or Leblon, known for their safety and vibrant atmosphere. When exploring the city, use reputable transportation options like ride-sharing apps or official taxis, especially at night. Uber was very affordable and we used it everywhere. It’s wise to avoid displaying valuables such as expensive jewellery or electronics in public. Opt for a money belt or a hidden pouch for carrying essentials like cash and identification. You want to blend in, dress like locals and avoid staring on your map – making you an easy target. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, and always be mindful of your surroundings. Get travel insurance, so anything unexpected can be resolved. Engaging with locals and asking for advice on safe areas to visit can provide invaluable insights. For couples eager to explore, guided tours offer a secure and informative way to discover Rio’s attractions. Don’t forget to call you children! E-sim is a must when you travel so far away, so you’re constantly connected to those at home, and… your Uber driver 🙂 By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your kid free vacation while fully immersing yourselves in the vibrant culture and stunning scenery of Rio de Janeiro.

Beware of Caipirinhas—they’re both delicious and potent, containing only alcohol, limes, and sugar without any mixers. If you’re planning to visit Frankfurt’s Christmas Market during your 9-hour layover, take it easy. You don’t want to arrive at your next destination feeling like you have food poisoning, enduring a slow and uncomfortable death in a business lounge.

If you are still wondering why would you not bring your children to every vacation that you go for… here is the reminder.
