Amsterdam in one day

Morning in Amsterdam

Must-See Morning Attractions

Hold your horses! First you need to get there! The Netherlands is a small country and if flight prices on your desired dates look rather silly… look into the flight to Eindhoven. Very budget friendly, tiny airport, only 1h 15minutes train ride across the whole country. Cost – £19 one way. Worth considering if you can catch a very early flight, still arrive in the city of fun at 9am and save some pounds.

Aaaaand of we go!

Kick off your day with a visit to the Anne Frank House. It’s a powerful experience and a must-see when tackling Amsterdam in one day. Be sure to book tickets in advance to avoid long lines. In fact my hotel (Clemens Hotel) was just 5 minutes walk from the museum, and tickets were sold out when I tried to buy them, so it was a perfect pit stop to look at it outside, without my backpack while I was waiting for my room to be ready. Then, take a leisurely stroll along the iconic canals. Amsterdam’s canal belt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you’re literally walking through history. Don’t forget to snap a photo or two! Afterward, head to the Jordaan district. It’s full of quirky shops and cozy cafés, perfect for a mid-morning coffee break. Treat yourself to a stroopwafel, a sweet Dutch delight that’ll give you the energy boost you need. If you’re an art lover, consider popping into the nearby Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum. They’re home to some of the world’s most famous masterpieces.

Breakfast Spots

Start your morning right with a hearty breakfast at some of Amsterdam’s best spots. Head over to The Pancake Bakery, where you can indulge in traditional Dutch pancakes. Whether you like them sweet or savory, they’ve got you covered. If you’re looking for something more contemporary, try Bakers & Roasters. This Kiwi-Brazilian café offers a diverse menu with something for everyone. Their coffee is top-notch—just what a mother travelling without kids might need to kickstart the day! For a more local vibe, visit Café de Jaren. Located along the canal, it provides a serene setting to enjoy your breakfast while planning your ‘Amsterdam in one day’ itinerary. Each of these places offers a unique taste of the city, ensuring your morning is both satisfying and delightful. If you want to set the right party mood from the moment you step into Amsterdam’s lavish world… and you want to keep it on a budget – walking through the Red Light District will give you plenty of opportunities to munch on a very fueling space brownie!

Quick Guide to Amsterdam’s Canals

Amsterdam’s canals are the heart of the city, offering a unique glimpse into its history and charm. With over 100 kilometers of canals, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Start your exploration with the Grachtengordel, the famous canal belt encircling the old city center. Not only is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it also features beautifully preserved 17th-century architecture. Consider renting a bike or taking a canal cruise (if the weather treats you well) for a relaxed pace. This is your chance to see the city from a different perspective. Keep an eye out for houseboats and quaint bridges—perfect for those picturesque moments. If you’re on foot, don’t miss the canals in the Jordaan district, where quaint streets and hidden courtyards await. As a female travelling solo, navigating the canals is safe and easy, offering plenty of Instagram-worthy spots.

Afternoon Adventures

Iconic Museums to Explore

After a morning of wandering, spend your afternoon diving into Amsterdam’s rich artistic heritage. Begin with the Rijksmuseum, where you can marvel at works by Dutch masters like Rembrandt and Vermeer. If time is tight, focus on the masterpieces gallery to catch the highlights. Next, make your way to the Van Gogh Museum, just a short walk away. Here, you’ll find the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh’s work, offering a window into his life and art. Both museums are located in Museumplein, making it convenient to explore them back-to-back. If you’re not an art fan, the Madame Tussauds, Sexmusuem, Cannabis Museum or Torture Museum might be more up your street. There is something for everyone that still can be classified as ‘cultural experience’. As a mother travelling without kids, this is your chance to immerse yourself in whatever you want to do or whoever you want to be!

Best Lunch Stops in Amsterdam

When hunger strikes in the afternoon, Amsterdam offers a plethora of delightful lunch spots. Begin with Foodhallen, a vibrant indoor food market located in the Oud-West neighborhood. With a variety of stalls serving everything from sushi to artisanal burgers, it’s a foodie paradise. For something more traditional, visit a local “eetcafé” like Café Loetje, known for its delicious steak and cozy atmosphere. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, grab a sandwich at Broodje Bert, where you’ll enjoy fresh ingredients piled high on crusty bread. For a scenic lunch, head to De Plantage near the Artis Zoo. The beautiful surroundings and diverse menu make it a perfect spot to rest and recharge. Each of these options offers a unique taste of Amsterdam, providing the perfect pause in your one day itinerary. Whether you prefer bustling markets or serene settings, there’s a spot that’ll suit your mood perfectly.

Shopping Spree

Shopping in Amsterdam offers a unique blend of high fashion, vintage charm, and local flair, making it a must-visit destination for any shopper. For those seeking one-of-a-kind treasures, the city’s vintage shops are a goldmine. Neighbourhoods like De Negen Straatjes (The Nine Streets) are home to quirky boutiques where you can find carefully curated pre-loved clothing, retro accessories, and eclectic home decor. If you’re looking for something more contemporary, head over to By Popular Demand—a trendy concept store known for its streetwear, minimalist designs, and cutting-edge aesthetics. For a more mainstream shopping experience, the bustling Kalverstraat, one of Amsterdam’s busiest shopping streets, offers a mix of international brands, department stores, and local shops. Whether you’re hunting for a vintage gem or exploring the latest fashion trends, Amsterdam’s diverse shopping scene caters to every style and budget, making it a top destination for both casual browsers and serious fashionistas alike.

Enjoying Amsterdam in one day Nightlife

As the sun sets, Amsterdam’s vibrant nightlife comes alive, offering something for every taste. Start your evening at a cozy canal-side bar, such as Café ‘t Smalle, where you can enjoy a classic Dutch beer in a historical setting. For a more lively atmosphere, head to the Leidseplein area, packed with bustling bars and clubs. If you dare – Red Light District is full of coffeeshops, bars and window displays of beautiful sexworkers to admire. Head to Casa Rosso for a €2 Peep Show, where you can watch 5minutes worth of performance from behind the glass in your own cubicle.

Paradiso, housed in a former church, is a popular spot for live music and dancing the night away. My feet were itchy for a Techno Night at Melkweg – however my ‘mother of two’ tired brain wouldn’t allow me to stay awake long enough. If you prefer a more cultural experience, consider attending a performance at the Concertgebouw, known for its exceptional acoustics and world-class concerts. For a unique night out, the A’DAM Tower’s rooftop bar offers panoramic views of the city, perfect for sipping cocktails as you admire Amsterdam’s skyline. Whether you’re in the mood for a relaxed evening or an energetic night out, Amsterdam’s nightlife has something to offer, ensuring your day ends on a high note.
